Under the white ensign [manuscript] : [notes by Edwin Thomas Peirce, a marine on HMS Diamond] / Edwin Thomas Peirce. 1884-1885.

The author was a marine on the HMS Diamond which was commissioned for the Australia Station. He sailed on the troopship Tamar to join the Diamond. He describes leaving England; seasickness; ports visited; the ceremony at the crossing of the equator; arrival into Sydney Harbour; going onto HMS Diamond; preparing for sea; arrival of Rear Admiral Tryon; naval exercises. The diary is accompanied by an account from the Daily Telegraph newspaper from January 1886 of the cruise of the Diamond.
